Luambe Camp
Luambe Camp is situated on the banks of the Luangwa River, in an area where the river forms large, natural pool, which is home to hundreds of hippo. Luambe National Park is located on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River halfway between South and North Luangwa National Park. Although this is a remote Park, it is surprisingly easy to reach, as it is an easy 4 - 5 hour drive from Mfuwe (which has daily flights from Lusaka).
Accommodation at Luambe Camp is in 4 spacious en-suite safari tents set under large trees and each offering a spectacular view of the Luangwa River and its abundant wildlife.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner times are all flexible and governed by activities. All meals are served in the dining area. In the evening, enjoy sundowners in the shade of the trees, whilst enjoying the antics of the resident hippos. There is also the potential sightings of elephant, buffalo, crocodile and a wide variety of water birds in front of camp. At night you can expect to fall asleep to the sound of hippos as they leave the river to graze.
There are a variety of activities available at Luambe, enjoy game drives and guided walks through the woodlands and out onto the plains with your guide to learn about what the Luambe wilderness has to offer.
The grasslands of the Chipuka Plains are favoured by buffalo, elephant and other species such as impala, puku, kudu, Crawshay’s zebra and the Thornicroft’s giraffe. You might also be lucky enough to spot reedbuck, Cookson's wildebeest, eland, wild dog, leopard, hyena and lion.
Guided birding excursions are also on offer as Luambe National Park supports more than 200 species of birds. For the avid birder, there are some exceptional sightings on offer - including raptors such as the martial eagle, tawny eagle and African fish eagles. Around Camp, you can also see the African skimmer, racket-tailed roller, Pel´s fishing owl, white-backed night-heron and Lilian´s lovebirds. As many of the species are seasonal visitors, species vary quite extensively. Large colonies of southern carmine bee-eaters can be found along the banks of Luangwa River in September and October.
Guests at Luambe can also enjoy village tours to Chitungulu, to meet the locals, and learn more of the local peoples and culture.
Luambe's resident leopard frequently visits camp to drink at the little water hole, which allows some lucky guests some excellent photographic opportunities. Other shy and nocturnal creatures can also be found when returning from the evening drive - including porcupine, honey badgers, and serval.
