Flatdogs, Chikoko Trail
6 night/ 7 day Trail. Explore 2 different areas of the South Luangwa from 2 very different lodges
Days 1 - 3:
Upon arrival at Mfuwe Airport, you will be met by a guide from Flatdogs and transferred by road to camp. Your accommodation is in the luxury en-suite safari tents, set on the River bank. Although the tents have the authentic feel, they still enjoy modern touches. All tents are mosquito-proofed, have electric lights, charging points and fans, as well as an open air bathroom with hot shower, WC and basin.
From Flatdogs you head out at 6 o'clock each morning, after a light breakfast, for a four hour safari, taking with you tea, coffee and biscuits for a mid-morning break. Usually you return to camp just after 10h00 in time for either a big cooked breakfast or a brunch type lunch, whichever is preferred.
You have relax during the heat of the day or take a couple of hours visiting local places of interest - a local school, or rural health clinic, the nearby anti-poaching base or a wildlife education centre which aims to teach local children all about conservation of both habitat and animals.
Then its afternoon tea at 15h30, after which you head back to the Park again. You get to stop at one of the Luangwa's scenic spots, to watch the glorious sunset, after which you return to Camp by 20h00 in time for dinner.
Days 4 - 6:
After the morning activity, you enjoy a game drive in the park, which takes you to Remote Africa's Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp, two small and exclusive bush camps in the South Luangwa National Park, which together form the Chikoko Trails and offers the only true walking safari in the Park, no vehicles. You will be met by your guide at the vehicle drop-off point, and continue by foot to Camp.
Each camp offers en suite accommodation for a maximum of six people. There are flush toilets, showers (with hot water provided in the evening) and running (cold) water throughout the day. Full support is provided with an experienced walking guide, armed scout and chef as well as general camp staff. Both camps are constructed of entirely natural materials and are re-built each season.

The daily routine is a long walk in the morning, and you start early to avoid the heat of the day. The walk lasts approximately four hours. The pace leisurely as the guide stops to talk about points of interest as you go. Ample drinking water is provided and there is also a mid-way stop for tea/coffee brewed over an open fire while you sit back and enjoy your surrounds. Return to camp mid-morning with time to for a relaxed lunch and a siesta followed by another shorter afternoon walk arriving back at camp by dusk.
It is usual to enjoy good sightings of leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant, and zebra, as well as Cookson's wildebeest and Thornicroft's giraffe (both unique to this area). Kudu and roan antelope are frequently sighted and huge herds of buffalo are abundant in these parts.
Day 7:
Time to bid farewell to your guide. Your actual departure time is co-ordinated to fit-in with the remainder of your itinerary and any onward connections.
