South Luangwa Walking Trail
An 8 night privately guided safari adventure inside the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. This safari will follow the course of the seasonal Luwi River until it reaches its confluence with the Luangwa River. Spend your nights split between three camps which follow the River’s course: Luwi Camp,Nsolo Camp and Kakuli Camp.
Terrain varies from the wild and unexplored source of the Luwi River to the breath-taking confluence with the Luangwa. If you so wish, you may even spend a night under the stars with your Guides and the campfire for company – far from civilization and ensuring a truly remote African bush experience.
The camps are small – only 4 rooms at each and all blend into the wilderness as they are constructed with natural materials and are solar powered. Service and quality of food are in no way compromised, and as this is your private safari, you will set your own pace.

Day 1 Luwi Camp
Arrive at Lusaka Airport where you will be met, and assisted with check in formalities for your flight to Mfuwe Airport, just over one hour away. At Mfuwe Airport your Guides will meet you, and they will drive you to Luwi Camp, where you will have time to settle in, before enjoying a walk later in the afternoon.
Day 2 and 3 Luwi Camp
As the sun rises, you will leave camp, taking a picnic breakfast and lunch with you and you will head up stream deep into really wild country towards the foothills of the Muchinga Escarpment into the miombo woodland. You will then begin to walk downstream of the Luwi. After brunch overlooking a waterhole, you will make your way back towards Luwi in time for a sun downer at the lagoon and dinner in camp.
Day 4 Nsolo Camp
Depart from camp early, walking downstream towards Nsolo Camp. The river widens in this section and the Lowy’s white sands carve a dynamic route through open grazing lawns, palm and trichelia groves, thicket and game rich “dambos” for which the Luangwa Valley is so well known.
You will arrive at Nsolo in time for brunch to find your luggage waiting for you in your room. Take a rest and soak up the magical atmosphere of one of the oldest bush camps in the Luangwa Valle
Day 5 Nsolo
Spend the day exploring the Nsolo area.
Day 6 Kakuli
Leave Nsolo and head downstream towards Kakuli. Set up your bedroll and mosquito net, build the camp fire and make preparations for your “Return to the Wild” sleep out night.
Day 7 Kakuli
You will walk the remainder of the course of the Luwi and arrive at the confluence of the Luangwa and Kakuli Camp later in the day. Kakuli has amazing views over the Luangwa, and offers an ideal spot to explore the riverine area, both during walks and from a vehicle.
Day 8 Kakuli
Today being your final day, you may spend it either partaking of a full day game drive, or on foot, or just relax in camp, taking in the tranquillity and views across the hippo-filled Luangwa River.
Day 9
You will be transferred back to Mfuwe Airport in time to check in for your flight back to Lusaka Airport.
The itinerary can be adapted to suit individual requirements. Guests can add a night or two at Kapani Lodge to be closer to the villages and experience some of our community projects, or perhaps add a night or two at Mchenja for a bit of luxury at the end of the trip.
