Shumba Camp
Shumba Camp is in the famed Busanga Plains area, in the northern section of the Kafue National Park. The Plains, covering some 750 square kilometres, are considered one of Zambia's most important wetlands as well as a wildlife paradise, as it is home to excellent populations of plains game, predators and birds.
Shumba Camp is built on stilts to protect it from the seasonal floodwaters; this also allows for extensive views over the Busanga Plains. The Camp’s accommodation is in 6 spacious luxury safari tents, each on raised platforms. Shumba Camp is probably the most luxurious of all Kafue's camps. The ‘tents’ are generous and exquisite with luxurious modern fittings and an especially inviting outside lounge area overlooking the plains.
A big focus at the camp is to involve guests in the safari way of life and many of the meals are prepared and cooked in front of you.
Activities at Shumba are led by enthusiastic guides who have an excellent knowledge of the Kafue area and its wildlife. Guests have the option of game drives and walking safaris in and around the Busanga Plains. Night drives provide the added excitement of the nocturnal wonders of the area.

Shumba Camp is perfectly situated to take advantage of the plains game and predator concentrations of the area, as it is in close proximity to permanent water and has easy access to a mix of seasonal and permanent floodplains. Shumba is named after a favourite species in the area - prides of lion sometimes up to 20 strong. Viewing of species such as puku, lechwe and hippo is possible for much of the day from the comfort of your tent or the main deck, while the camp's fig trees ensure both shade and constant bird activity in the canopy above.
The Camp also offers a number of additional activities (at extra cost):
Specialist birding safari ± 3 hours. The area boasts some 491 species (some migratory), including the endemic Chaplin's barbet, and birding enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice; the area is also alive with rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers, herons and large flocks of storks.
Enjoy a full day of game viewing with a knowledgeable guide, with a restful midday siesta comprising a delicious picnic lunch in the dappled shade of the trees.
Nowhere else in Zambia can you take to the skies in a hot-air balloon. This experience (for guests who stay 3 nights or more) ends with a champagne breakfast.
Early on in the season, the Busanga Plains are still covered in large amounts of water. A boating excursion during this time allows for exploration of the channels and their life.
