Lion Camp
Lion Camp is located in the northernmost reaches of the South Luangwa, and is thus set in a remote part of the Park. The Camp is set overlooking an oxbow lagoon at the top end of a plain. Being furthest from the gate, Lion Camp offers guests a truly authentic safari experience. Here you can enjoy some excellent game viewing as the Park is home to some 60 mammal and 400 bird species.
Lion Camp has just been totally revamped, and has been built on elevated decking which stretches along the lagoon. Accommodation is in 10 suites, each of which is joined by a central winding walkway. All of the suites (there are 8 luxury and 2 deluxe units) enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the plain, and good numbers of wildlife pass through the camps which can be viewed from the comfort of your own deck.
The 8 luxury suites retain an essential ‘tree house’ feel, and have canvas walls and a thatch roof. There are now Evening Breeze cooling units set over the beds. In addition, there is a new water filtration system which ensures crystal clear pressurised showers. The 2 deluxe suites offer superior luxury and maximise some prime locations. Although similar in design to the luxury suites, they are larger, and have an outdoor bath.
During the day, the netting at the front of your bedroom can be rolled up to allow access to your private deck. The bathroom is set off to the side to provide more privacy, whilst ensuring an unobstructed view out.

The main Camp area is spacious and the hub is the well-stocked bar, but the Boma is a draw for chilly mornings and for al fresco dining. The swimming pool is a central feature of the extensive main deck in front of the Camp, and also provides an excellent game viewing platform.
The best time for game viewing tends to be in the early morning and late afternoon when animals are their most active. The game drives are conducted in open vehicles, allowing for some extensive exploration of the area, which includes savannah, woodland and riverine areas.
Night drives are also a feature in South Luangwa, as they allow you to see nocturnal wildlife, and some behaviour that more often takes place after dark, such as leopard and lion hunts. The afternoon game drive continues into the night after a ‘sundowner’ and brings you back to camp in time for a delicious dinner.
Game walks with experienced guides are also a feature of the Park, and here you will have the opportunity to learn more about the bush, and what makes the South Luangwa so special.
Game moves freely throughout the camp and its environs. With good populations of lion, leopard, buffalo and giraffe in the immediate area along with elephant, hippo, bushbuck and antelope your game viewing promises to be special.
